Multiphoton Rabi oscillations

When an atom is strongly coupled to a cavity, the two systems can exchange a single photon through a coherent Rabi oscillation. In the last few years, experiments have reached the regime of ultrastrong coupling, where the strength of the interaction between light and matter becomes comparable to the the atomic transition frequency or the resonance frequency of the cavity mode. In this work, we show that this regime can be used to extend the concept of Rabi oscillations, enabling coherent multiphoton exchanges of energy between the atom and the cavity.
